  • NEW INTENSITY RECORD AT THE CERN PS : 3.115 E13 at PS transition

Just one month after the previous record of 3.02 E13 protons accelerated up to transition energy in the CERN Proton Synchrotron, a new step was reached on the 26th September with more than 3.1 E13 protons.

The proton Linac was again working near its top performance with a current of 163 mA delivered to the PS Booster which accelerated more than 3.45 E13 protons and extracted 3.32 E13 protons towards the PS. The main improvements were carried out on the Booster (acceleration, bunch shape and synchronisation). The losses were minimised in the PS by optimising the injection , the low energy working points and the acceleration process.

At 11:22, the PS proton intensity finally reached a new peak value of 3.115  E13 protons whilst the intensity at extraction at 14 GeV/c was 3.05 E13 protons.

NEW INTENSITY RECORD AT THE CERN PS

On the 28th August at 11:42, for the first time, 3.000E13 protons were accelerated up to transition energy in the CERN Proton Synchrotron, breaking the previous record of 2.9E13,dating from August 1996.
The proton Linac was working near its top performance with a current of 163 mA delivered to the PS Booster which extracted 3.085E13 protons towards the PS. The losses were minimised in the PS by optimising the injection and the acceleration processes.
On the 29th August, after  other careful adjustments of the chain of the 3 accelerators , the PS proton intensity often exceeded the value of 3.000 E13 and finally reached a new record of 3.020 E13 whilst the intensity at extraction at 14 GeV/c was 2.920 E13.
